Eugene Amo-Dadzie has pledged to prove accountants aren’t boring after the world’s fastest number cruncher booked his place in the semi-finals of the 100metres at the World Athletics Championships.

Amo-Dadzie, a latecomer to the sport who has had to take annual leave from his job, was second in his heat while Zharnel Hughes won his and the third Brit in action, Reece Prescod, also made it through to the semis.

The 31-year-old Amo-Dadzie first learned he was speedy by running for the bus and has been swarmed by messages of congratulations from his fellow accountants, although no new job offers as yet.

“I’ve had a lot of support from all the different accountant bodies,” he said. “They’re like ‘yo, you’re putting accountants on the map’.

“We’re not just these boring stiff squares sat at the office typing away. We’ve got a bit of something about us you know. There’s probably accountants out there who are probably wrestlers, F1 drivers, who knows. I was sat in an office so who knows?”

Amo-Dadzie raised eyebrows when he became the latest British sprinter to run sub-10seconds this season and looked at ease in his heat as he eased up well before the line to clock a time of 10.10s.

He admitted he had aspirations to make the final on Sunday night but said: “Me being here is already a victory for me so anything that happens is kind of a bonus.”

The Rainham-born athlete has relished the tag bestowed upon him since emerging on the scene this season.

He added: “It was a nice touch for the world’s fastest accountant. You didn’t have to do that. But I’m on the world stage. I say to people who don’t really know track and field, I’m at the World Cup of athletics and they’re like ‘ok’.

“For me, that’s incredible because this is beyond a dream. I didn’t grow up dreaming to do this but, by the grace of God, I found myself doing this.”

Amo-Dadzie was born to Ghanaian parents in United Kingdom and began his career as an athlete at the age of 26.

Melbourne, 12 December 2022; FINA, the Fédération Internationale de Natation, has today become World Aquatics following a vote at an Extraordinary Congress on the eve of the World Swimming Championships (25m) 2022. Over its 114-year history, FINA and its 209 member federations have maintained responsibility for swimmers, artistic swimmers, divers, high divers, open water swimmers and water polo players.

The launch of the World Aquatics brand arrives after a series of major reforms that sees a modern organisation ready to lead and serve athletes united by water, with a broader scope and increased engagement with participants and audiences.

“Everyone in our community is proud of what FINA achieved in developing our sports. As we look to the future, World Aquatics will see all aquatics athletes united for the first time under one brand. The identity of our organisation now focuses on our shared vision: a world united by water, for health, life and sport,” said World Aquatics President Husain Al-Musallam.

“FINA is a French acronym. The word ‘Natation’ represents swimmers. These days, swimmers are only one, important, part of our FINA family. We need a name that reflects the whole FINA family. A name that can be used with pride by our divers, high divers, artistic swimmers, open water swimmers and our water polo athletes.

” I will always tell you that our athletes must come first, so I would never make a big decision like this without consulting our athletes. Their response has been very clear. More than seventy per cent of the athletes that we have spoken with have said that they would like us to change FINA’s name. Many of them could not even tell us what the letters in FINA stand for.”

By World Aquatics President Husain Al-Musallam announcing the new brand for global aquatics

The adoption of the World Aquatics name was confirmed by a vote of member federations at an Extraordinary Congress in Melbourne earlier today. It marks the culmination of 18 months of intensive organisational transformation, much of it guided by the FINA Reform Committee. During this process, World Aquatics has made very significant improvements to its governance, including the strengthening of the athletes’ voice in decision-making and the creation of an independent Aquatics Integrity Unit.

“World Aquatics will continue to deliver and develop the rewarding competition calendar that has become the foundation of successful elite careers while being the subject of dreams and ambitions for millions of young aquatics athletes all around the globe,” continued Al-Musallam.

“Our new vision and mission also reflect how World Aquatics and our members have already begun expanding our work beyond competition and swimming as a life skill, to include sustainability, environmental advocacy and wellbeing. Our new brand and visual identity will also enable us to connect with new audiences and encourage new generations of athletes across our disciplines to be united by water, safely, fairly and sustainably.”

The 25-year-old made it to the last stage of the competition and she is now on the verge of annexing a medal for the country

Ghanaian athlete Abigail Kwarteng has made qualified to the final of Women’s High jump at the 2022 Commonwealth Games ongoing in Birmingham, UK on Thursday.

The 25-year-old made it to the final after clearing a height of 1.81 and will now compete for a medal.

Four months ago, Kwarteng made history when he set a new national record by 5cms when she scaled to a new personal best height of 1.92m to pick a gold medal at the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, Alabama on Saturday April 16, 2022.

Few days ago, Kwarteng granted an interview to GHone TV and slammed the leadership of sports in Ghana, insisting that nobody should expect medals from athletes they have not invested in enroute to the tournament.

“You don’t expect from where you don’t invest. If everything was good and I was able to continue how wouldn’t my training be good,” she said.

“If I had enough time to rest and enough time to be in practice I could easily stand and tell you that I’m very confident that things are going to be great. However, I have to work 12 hours a day and spend just about 3 to 4 hours practicing.”

“I’m going to go out there and do my best. My coach is really trying and that is why I say I can see what is going to happen. It is not even just with me but I think Ghanaians shouldn’t expect much from anybody you didn’t invest in, however, we are going to go out there and do whatever we could because we love the sport and that is what we are here for and give our 100 per cent. And, the prayer is that our 100 per cent is enough,” she concluded.

Ghanaian 100 meters runner Benjamin Azamati failed to win a medal for his country once again after coming fourth in the 2022 Commonwealth Games ongoing in Birmingham, UK.

The 24-year-old finished fourth in the Men’s final on Tuesday with a time of 10:16, missing the Bronze medal by 0.02 second as Yupen Abykoon narrowly picked the medal.

“I admit I have problems with poor start and it’s something that has gotten into my head,” Azamati told AshesGyamera.com in an interview after the race.

“I think I need a psychologist. I will also speak to my doctors going forward and hope to resolve this.

“I’m not disappointed despite failing to grab a medal. This is 100 metres and every microsecond counts so I will have to work hard,” he added.

Azamati also heaped praise on Kenyan superstar Ferdinand Omanyala who won the race and believes he is a motivation for the younger generation.

“Ferdinand Omanyala won the race and I can say he’s a great athlete. It always feel good to race with such a talent. He has worked for it and I think it is a motivation for others to emulate,” he said.

In other related news, Sean Safo-Antwi failed in to reach the final of the 100 metres as he came fifth in Heat 2 with a time of 10:38.

Meanwhile, Ghana is assured of two medals as boxers Joseph Commey and Abdul Omar Wahib have reached the semifinals of Featherweight and Light Welterweight division respectively.

The duo has automatically won a bronze medal but can go for gold or silver should they defeat their opponents in the semifinals on Thursday.

Ghanaian Men’s Table Tennis star Derek Abrefa defeated Moosa Munsif Ahmed from Maldives 4-0 on Wednesday morning at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

Despite initial controversies surrounding Abrefa’s illegibility to play in the game, the Ghanaian shrugged off the setback and then jumped into the arena to win the day.

He won the first three sets and only needed another victory to settle the game and prevent it from advancing into another round where all the seven sets had to be completed.

Abrefa will face Rifat Sabbir from Bangladesh in the afternoon of Wednesday at the same venue.

Ghana’s Abeiku Jackson has given the country a major boost at the 2022 Commonwealth Games as he has reached the semifinals of Men’s 100 metres Butterfly in Swimming on Monday in Birmingham.

After the Ghanaian contingent suffered several setbacks following defeats to some boxers, swimmers and the Hockey team, Jackson brought a sign of relief to the faces of Ghanaians in Birmingham.

The youngster made a time of 53:60 to book a place in the last two and would be hoping to make it to the final and possibly win Ghana’s first medal at the competition.

Out of eight swimmers, Jackson finished fifth behind Jamie Ingram who toppled the group, Jacob Thomas Taylor Peters, Cody Simpson and Finlay Knox.

Abeiku, who is hoping to beat Ghana’s all-time record of 53:39 which he set in 2020 in Japan, became the first Ghanaian to participate in Swimming at the Olympic Games in 2016 at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Ghana’s Abdul Wahib Omar made it to the next stage of 2022 Commonwealth Games Light Weltherweight division in Boxing on Friday at the National Exhibition Centre Hall 4 in Birmingham, UK.

The 2016 Olympian and 2014 Commonwealth Games won in a split decision as majority of the judges went to his favour over Jamie Devine from Isle Of Man

The 28-year-old made a gigantic entrance into the bout as he landed a heavy blow on the right cheek of which nearly sent his opponent to the ground.

Although, Wahib won both the first and second rounds, Devine nearly forced the bout to a draw in the final stages as he recovered from his early slumber.

Wahib will now prepare to take on another opponent on Saturday in a bid to win a medal for Ghana.

Before today’s bout, Black Bombers coach Asare said: “We have prepared and we are determined to win against all opposition and all odds.”
